In Store Event - A Costa Rica Evening with Benjamin Vaughn

The Avid Reader is happy to welcome Ben Vaughn for a presentation and discussion of his nearly 20 years of living in Costa Rica. Topics will deal with family life, being a middle aged man, investing and earning a living, and the world of real estate in Costa Rica on Friday, November 24th at 7:30 p.m.

Ben grew up in Davis until graduating high school in 1977. He then moved to Aspen to become a ski bum. He lived full time in the Aspen valley starting in 1979 and 20 years later (January of 1999) he moved to Costa Rica with his wife, three kids and one son in law. He's been there ever since.

Ben describes his life as tranquil & serene. He has a simple home that looks out over the Pacific Ocean. He can launch his kayak from the beach just minutes from his home. Sometimes, when he's lucky, he finds himself amongst the whales. He's serenaded in the mornings by the howler monkeys and the myriad bird species that Costa Rica is famous for.

Talking points will be:

  • What it's like to live in Costa Rica.
  • Common issues and questions for those interested in moving to Costa Rica. He says that many who are moving to Costa Rica need for their property to generate income to supplement or fully support their lives.
  • Making money in Costa Rica
  • Real estate: What it costs. How the business of Costa Rica real estate differs from U.S. real estate. What it costs to build, etc... He'll have some example properties and currently available offerings there. Some are ocean view, some are walk-to-the-beach and so on.
  • What is needed to acquire and run an income generating property.
  • General topics such as: residency, learning Spanish, culture, opening a bank account, taxes, and more.
  • Question and Answer period for attendees.

Ben got into real estate in Costa Rica in 2004. He started a Costa Rica real estate blog in 2004 making it one of the longest running blogs on the subject. His blog deals pretty much with the outline of what will be presented at the Costa Rica Evening. Check it out at
