The Avid Reader will be welcoming local athlete Simona Celik as she shares her journey to becoming the 2019 Duathlon World Champion, in-store on Thursday, November 7th.
Twenty years ago, the terms “duathlon” (run-bike-run) and triathlon (swim-bike-run) and competitions were regarded as open only to a few.
Triathon made it to the Olympic stage in Sydney in 2000.
However, the Powerman Zofingen Long Distance Duathon World Championships recently happened for the 31st time and remains the most important duathlon event worldwide. It has the sequence of 10 km (6.21 mi) running, 150 km (93.21 mi) cycling and 30 km (18.64 mi) running.
The winner of that competition, local Davis resident, and event speaker Simona Celik was born and raised in Slovenia with a passion for sports. She grew up playing volleyball for 13 years, and represented her home country at the international level.
In 2011, she moved to the United States to earn a Masters of Science Degree. Since then, she has been competing and coaching within the sports of running and multisport. She won many titles, and participated in the Long-Distance Duathlon World Championships and USA Triathlon National Championships.
After becoming a mother, she took a leap into the unknown and followed her new passion, duathlon. She has surprised herself by going from "accidental duathlete" to winning every race she has entered since January 2019. Her biggest recent achievement is becoming the 2019 Age Group World Champion in ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon.
While she is now ranked the 9th best overall duathlete in the world, she believes her best performance is yet to come. Using her strong work ethic and finely-honed foot speed, she has her heart set on the 2020 World Championships Elite podium.
Between now and the 2020 competition, she plans to race in the Total Body Fitness New Year’s duathlon in Folsom, the Arizona Powerman in February and perhaps defend her title at the Orange Tri Series.
