Davis Shakespeare Festival Reading

We're so excited to welcome the 2018 Davis Shakespeare Festival cast for a special reading of “Mary Stuart” on Tuesday, June 19th at 7:30 p.m.

Come meet the cast and explore Davis Shakespeare Festival’s debut classical drama!

Davis Poet Laureate Dr. Andy Jones, will guide the audience through excerpts of Schiller’s Mary Stuart, read by cast members from the production. A discussion and Q&A will follow the event. Take part in kick starting the festival and see what this drama is all about!

The Davis Shakespeare Festival production of Mary Stuart runs Thursday, June 21st through Saturday, August 4th. In this powerful play, Queen Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots both hold a claim to the throne. Elizabeth has protected her reign by keeping Mary imprisoned, but after nineteen years, the queens go head to head in a fierce and dramatic showdown. Mary Stuart explores how these strong women must hold fast to their own voices in the midst of the infringing forces of politics, religion, and men. Peter Oswald’s translation premiered in 2005 in London’s West End and opened on Broadway in 2009, where it earned seven Tony Award nominations including Best Revival of a Play. The cast features Sacramento stalwart Jamie Jones as Queen Elizabeth I, Bay Area favorite Sharon Rietkerk as Mary Stuart, Ian Hopps as Mortimer, as well as Thomas Dean, Hans Eleveld, Gina Harrower, Gregg Koski, Martin Lehman, Will Oberholtzer, Sean O’Brien, and Kyle Stoner.
