Author Event - Truth, Fiction, and Lies by Susan Curry

The Avid Reader is happy to be hosting Susan Curry and her new title,Truth, Fiction and Lies: A Merran Scofield Mystery on Friday, January 18th at 7:30 p.m.

More about Truth, Fiction, and Lies:

It's a small Australian country town, where nothing bad happens, if you set aside the depression-era murder/suicide, and the present-day disappearance of a Japanese exchange student. What really happened? A class reunion sets the ball rolling.

An old diary, tucked away in a historical museum since the Great Depression, provides clues as to what really happened on a farm outside Wirrim, a small Australian country town. Was it a murder/suicide, where a young mother shot herself and her three children? Or was her husband responsible? Does knowledge of the history of the time carry some weight?

A Japanese teenager and exchange student, Hiroshi Nakamura, chronically anxious and depressed, walks out of Wirrim and vanishes. Has he survived? If so, where is he? If not, is this a suicide? Or murder? Malcolm Richardson, an elderly farmer and son of a Japanese prisoner-of-war survivor, admits that he met the boy but swears that he had nothing to do with the disappearance. Truth, or lies? And where do his father’s letters to his mother from the Middle East in World War II fit in?

These are mysteries that claim the attention of historian Merran Scofield, who grew up in Wirrim but left long ago to pursue an academic career in San Francisco. When she returns for a short study trip and attends a class reunion, she little guesses that her life will never be the same, thanks to former classmates, the local police officer and, again, her knowledge of the times.

Truth, Fiction, and Lies will appeal to mystery buffs; those interested in Australia, particularly its history; and armchair psychologists. It’s a fast read with a surprisingly complex plot which will keep you reading well into the night.

More about the author, Susan Curry:

Susan Curry grew up in a town in rural south-eastern Australia, very like the place she calls “Wirrim” in her novel. Its population of around 800 people, and its relative isolation at that time, made it certain that her experiences there in the flat, mostly dry landscape would be firmly imprinted in her mind. In her late teens she moved to Melbourne and completed a bachelor’s degree and a teaching credential at Monash University. Although she left Australia in her twenties and has lived there for only short periods ever since, she visits every year and regards herself as a cultural hybrid. Before the Amazon era, she imported Australian books and sold them throughout the U.S. for fifteen years, wrote book reviews, and also purchased American rights of several titles.

In mid-life she pursued a California license in marriage and family therapy, and has worked in private practice as a specialist in treating psychological trauma for over a decade.

Although she has spent extended periods in the U.K. and Norway, she has made Davis her home for over forty years.

Her writing is informed by her interest in history, psychology, human development and her lifelong love of great mysteries.
