Author Event - Jazz In Available Light by Veryl Oakland

The Avid Reader is pleased to welcome author Veryl Oakland and his photographs of Jazz artists, Jazz In Available Light, in-store on Friday, June 7th at 7:30 p.m.

More about Jazz In Available Light:

Oakland's volume shares personal stories and nearly 350 of his photographs many of which have never been published, nor seen, by the public. Emphasizing intimate, up-close and personal interactions with major jazz stars, Oakland’s stories interweave with his engaging photography, together bringing these moments and the music to life. Oakland profiles the music's masters in a wide variety of settings--under the spotlight, in their homes, and far from the stage. Jazz fans and music lovers everywhere will be enthralled to see these iconic images of diverse stars--Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey, Stan Getz, Phil Woods, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, Paul Bley, Weather Report, and Wynton Marsalis--covering music styles from swing, to bebop, cool, hard bop, free, and beyond. It was only in recent years that he discovered a large body of his archived negatives was still usable, despite flooding that ravaged his home years ago. This treasure rediscovered encouraged Oakland to bring this book to life, as well as reach out to galleries, years after his career had come to a close.
