Hagen’s book offers the first scholarly account of the anti-Jewish pogroms that accompanied the rebirth of Polish statehood out of World War I and the Polish-Soviet War, uniquely focusing on “folk anti-Semitism” as the cause of anti-Jewish violence of the time.

Hagen’s work of history is illustrated with contemporary photographs, constructed from extensive, newly discovered archival sources from three continents, and inclusive of extensive first-person testimonies.

William W. Hagen is a Professor Emeritus of European and World History at University of California at Davis. He appeared at The Avid Reader in 2012 with his first book German History in Modern Times: Four Lives of the Nation.
