Author Event - "...and I felt the simple sweetness of me" with Barbara West

The Avid Reader is excited to welcome local author, Barbara West for a reading, discussion, and signing of her debut poetry collection, "...and I felt the simple sweetness of me" on Friday, October 6th at 7:30 p.m.

Linda Honan, Professor at the Yale School of Nursing, writes, “Barbara’s book of poetry and prose offers readers a glimpse at the soul of this woman, this mother, this nurse. Her vulnerability, honesty, tenderness, and contemplation into the ordinary is extraordinary.”

Barbara West is the only parent of a 20-year-old son and works as a Wound/Ostomy/Continence Nurse, with prior work in Hospice and Home Health.  She has been writing poetry since age six, but stopped several years ago when her file cabinet filled up.  Thanks to support from the Sacramento and Davis poetry communities, she is thrilled to be writing again. Previously published in Full of Crow, Brevities, Medusa’s Kitchen, Sacramento Voices 2016, Swarthmore College Bulletin, Small Craft Warnings, Common Speaking, Escarp, Ascent Aspirations, and Davis Shambhala Center Newsletter, "...and I felt the simple sweetness of me" is her first published book. Thanks to a history of theater performing and a little time singing with a rock and roll band, Barbara enjoys reciting from memory.  This allows her to use her whole body to present a poem, usually without a mic, since her voice is plenty loud. She also enjoys windsurfing.
