Author Event (Sacramento) - Foresthill: A Public Defender's Bedtime Reader with David A. Brooks
Start: 2:00 pm
Bedtime stories for bikers, and anyone who knows what it feels like to laugh and cry for all the right reasons. A career Public Defender in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains reveals the characters who live there, and uncloaks our justice system's hidden truths. I wish I could buy St. Jude a beer. If you've lost something, he's the saint you're supposed to talk to about getting it back. Somewhere along the way I became a Guardian of Lost Causes, something I've done for 25 years as a Public Defender. I defend poor people and people who have no voice. I make sure that everyone has access to quality legal representation. Most of my clients were just people who were so damaged that they had a very difficult time making their way in the world. I've presented a mix of stories that strike me as funny, true, or profoundly sad. Some are all three at the same time. Characters have been fictionalized in order to maintain privacy and confidentiality, but they are based on real people and real places. You'll be able to tell because there's no way to make this stuff up.    David Brooks is a graduate of Colgate University and McGeorge School of Law, and has been defending the public since 1986. Mr. Brooks lives in Northern California.
Author Event (Davis) - Peach Farmer's Daughter with Brenda Nakamoto
Start: 7:30 pm
End: 9:00 pm
This unconventional, poetic, yet gritty memoir from Davis-based writer Brenda Nakamoto evokes her childhood as the daughter of a peach farmer in rural northern California, investigates her roots as sansei (third-generation Japanese-American), and movingly reflects on the decline of her aging parents. Nakamoto's deep connections to the land, farming, family, and the complexities of personal and family history give her work weight and balance.   “In this remarkable memoir, life floats between land and sky, people are transformed by work, dirt comes in both clean and dirty varieties, roots are deepened across time and space, and luck is given its place among the fruits. It’s rare that storytellers show us so gorgeously what the blur of love does to them in the telling. In these pages you will come undone as simply and completely as you have been grown.”— Rae Gouirand   “Nakamoto’s story of her father captures the soul of the nisei farmer, his boldness, his love of growing things.”—Kiyo Sato, author of Dandelion Through the Crack “In Peach Farmer's Daughter, writer Brenda Nakamoto brings to life her youth growing up as a third-generation Japanese American in the melting pot of California's Central Valley. Her stories sizzle and crackle with colorful imagery, agrarian fascinations, and ancestral tones. A great read.”—Clifton B. Parker, associate editor, UC Davis Magazine
