SUMMARY:Author Event - We're Getting On by James Kaelin
DESCRIPTION:
We're Getting On emerged from James Kaelan's skepticism of the direction this country is moving environmentally and technologically. The novel isn't a cautionary tale or a polemic\, necessarily\, but it reflects his uneasiness—even his fear—of what sort of country we'll be living in a few decades from now. Kaelan wanted\, therefore\, to do something positive to promote the novel. About a year ago he started wondering\, &quot\;What if there was a way to manufacture and promote a product in this country that not only didn't harm the environment\, but actually improved it?&quot\; That birthed the idea of a book that could grow into a tree. And a book that grows into a tree not only offsets its own production emissions\, it also\, technically\, creates the material to produce new books. In light of the oil spill—an environmental disaster perpetrated by an industry that trades in environmental catastrophes—We're Getting On and <a href=\\"http\://www.flatmancrooked.com/archives/5810\\">Flatmancrooked's Zero Emission Book project operates as an antidote to destructive business practices.

The lives of two disparate women—a single mother working
hard to make ends meet and a young figure skater at the top of her game—entwine
in an unforgettable novel of warmth\, depth\, and wisdom.

Izzy and her daughter Quinn have been on the move for all of Quinn’s nine
years. Izzy works the fields as a fruit picker\, following the produce north and
south through the growing season. When they reach a struggling pear orchard in
the Sacramento River Delta\, Izzy intends it to be just another way station in
their nomadic lives. But the orchard and its kindly owners capture Quinn’s
heart\, and Izzy briefly forgets that she’s running from a past that still
haunts her—until a strange incident brings national media attention to the
Delta.

Seemingly a world away\, Karen is a rising young star in figure skating with an

Is California beyond repair? A sizable number of Golden State citizens have concluded that it is. Incessant budget crises plus a government paralyzed by partisan gridlock have led to demands for reform\, even a constitutional convention. But what\, exactly\, is wrong and how can we fix it? In California Crackup\, Joe Mathews and Mark Paul provide clear and informed answers. Their fast-paced and often humorous narrative deftly exposes the constitutional origins of our current political and economic problems and furnishes a uniquely California fix\: innovative solutions that allow Californians to debate their choices\, settle on the best ones\, hold elected officials accountable for results\, and choose anew if something doesn't work.
Mark Paul is senior scholar and deputy director of the California program at the New America Foundation. He was formerly deputy treasurer of California and deputy editorial page editor of the Sacramento Bee.

&quot\;Reading In the Footsteps of Dracula\, I felt as if the ghosts of Bram Stoker (the author of Dracula) and Prince Vlad the Impaler were right beside me as I walked down cobblestone streets through the eerie villages of history. When you sink your teeth into this book\, you'll find fantastic photographs and a world filled with amazing stories that'll leave you wanting more. Unger has done an absolutely remarkable job of putting facts\, images\, and stories together\; I enjoyed it immensely.
