Founded in 1868, DavisA a¬A's history is divided into an
initial A a¬A"villageA a¬A" period (1860sA a¬A-1900s), a middle
four-decade A a¬A"townA a¬A" period (1910sA a¬A-1940s), and a
current and on-going A a¬A"cityA a¬A" period (1950s to present). Much of what people think of as quintessential A a¬A"DavisA a¬A" was created in the middle, town period. About 1910 and with the start of the University of California experimental farm, Davis began to grow and become a striving and thriving town. Focusing on the four decades of the 1910s to the 1940s, this book contains over two hundred images of Davis, including downtown streetscapes and businesses, public events and gatherings, prominent families and homes, churches, government, the Old East, Old North, and College Park neighborhoods, schools, and the University Farm.
